URBAN
KYTC Office Building

KYTC Office Building

Frankfort, Kentucky
Completed: 2004

In this project, the streetscape and site design work to link the new Transportation Cabinet Office Building with existing office and residential land uses. The streetscape incorporates multiple paving treatments, landscape, site furnishings, stone walls and a fountain and sculpture element to create attractive and inviting pedestrian spaces both for building occupants and the public. This streetscape becomes a prominent symbol for downtown Frankfort, as an extension of the new building and a part of revitilizing the downtown.

Design for both the landscape and building were facilitated through a charette process, wherein the Client’s program, the specific needs of the site and the concerns and opinions of the citizens of Frankfort were incorporated into the design solution.

Blue Grass Airport Mural Wall

Blue Grass Airport Mural Wall

Lexington, Kentucky
Completed: Summer 2005

A 300' long by 30' tall retaining wall for the Blue Grass Airport was needed as a part of a runway safety zone expansion along historic Versailles Road in Lexington. Traditional methods of landscaping could not be used as screening elements because plant material would attract birds into airspace as jet aircraft are landing. Working in conjunction with the Airport Administration, Mark Arnold and Jocelyn Hinshaw developed a concept that would create a "Landscape" without the traditional elements of landscaping. We developed a scene that would be painted directly on the wall and then emerge from the wall into earth forms in front of the wall. The landscape includes bronze horse sculptures, traditional stone walls and large earth berms.

Greensburg Town Square

Greensburg Town Square

Greensburg, Kentucky
Completed: Winter 2004

The finished product is the real proof of a good plan. Mark Arnold worked closely with the City of Greensburg to help them define their goals and objectives for the town square. The history was already there, the wonderful old buildings in place, and the commitment of the community was strong. The Master Plan just brought these elements together by providing a continuity that had been missing and proving once again that the best solutions are the simple ones.

London Main Street

London Main Street

London, Kentucky
Ongoing

The Streetscape for London began with the idea of creating a more friendly pedestrian environment along Main Street. We wanted to enjoy being downtown and have opportunities to experience a cup of coffee or tea at a Sidewalk Cafe.

The wide walks allowed for us to add a substantial planting edge along the curb. With bollards and chain fencing and special pavement, we created a sense of safety and security for the pedestrians and had just enough room to add a cozy table or two along the walkway. Now you can have a spot of tea in London.

Isaac Murphy Memorial Garden Isaac Murphy Memorial Garden

Isaac Murphy Memorial Garden

Lexington, Kentucky
Completed: 2008

The design for the Isaac Murphy Memorial Garden weaves several historical themes and activities into a contemporary urban space for Downtown Lexington. It is first a suitable memorial for the most successful jockey of all time. Secondly, it is a space which honors the African American contribution to the Thoroughbred industry. It is also an opportunity to provide a cool island of shade in the urban environment. It is a place where visual and performing art can happen in an unbridled fashion and it is a place where the community can gather and connect to the land, the soil and the vegetation of a community rain garden.

Park features include a ribbon of stone swirling through the park telling the story of this dynamic urban neighborhood. There will be a video “Curtain” along the main plaza depicting the story of the African American contribution to the horse industry through a multi-media presentation.  There will also be turf “Waves” which represent the bluegrass landscape. On the waves the community can play, sit, watch concerts, frolic, fly kites, display art, and enjoy the tactile sensation of rolling in the grass.
